What does aX+b mean?

  • Let X represent the number of hours you work each day

    • To work out your pay, Y, the company triples your hours and adds £60

      • Y equals 3 X plus 60

What are the formulae for E(aX ± b) and Var(aX ± b)?

  • If a and b are constants then a X plus b is a linear transformation of X

  • These are two important formulae:

  • If values of X are multiplied by a, then
